Ten years of sewing 3-5 garments per month-
My unwritten agenda was a closet full of clothes that would be fun to dress from every morning.
That hasn’t happened.
So we’re offering Wardrobe Capsules: Discovery and Planning.
Maybe it’s for me. Maybe it’s for you.
Ten years of teaching sewing-
Seeing the ah ha’s that happen when everyone sews the same garment for their different body in different fabrics.
Trying to make a drop shoulder shirt into your favorite classic blouse from Talbots.
So we’re offering Wardrobe Capsules: Let’s Do This! Sew the basics that most of us wear using basic patterns and learning to fit ourselves. The classic blouse will have to wait till 2020.
Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Treadle or Monday, Oct. 7 at 1st Sewing.
Just in case you didn’t make it to any of the meetings or you want to refresh your memory of the garments presented, here is a virtual version of August-

August 2019
Debbie’s Garments:

Floral Print Tee
New Look 6556, View B
Rayon lycra print with solid knit trim
When I saw a RTW on a friend it was so cute and I knew I had the pattern so I was anxious to give it a try. This was not a win! I did not care for the fold nor the dropped sleeves. I got rid of the fold and recut the front and made a basic tee that I will more likely wear.

Blue and White Button Band Sleeves
Favorite Tee-Shirt pattern adapted
Cotton lycra with blue interlock bands and 9 buttons.
This is a remake from a garment I made August 2018. I copied a RTW tee once again and will get more wear out of new make than the previous.
Blue Jeans
Jalie Eleonore Jeans
Cotton stretch woven
This is TNT pattern.

Blue Stripe Woven Tank
New Look 6217, View B
Linen/rayon blend with purchased bias trim.
1. The neck opening is large enough that the back does not need button opening.
2. Bias trim is stitched ws to rs and topstitched to finish neck edge and sleeve hems.

Navy Lace Tee
Butterick 6418, View A
ITY knit and poly lace sleeves and yoke
Made to pattern except I finished neck edge and sleeve hem with elastic knit piping.
I was hoping to use the lace selvage for sleeve hem but it had several flaws.

Pink Dot Tee
Sew House Seven Tabor V-Neck, View #2
Cotton lycra
Made to pattern except
1. Petited front, back and sleeve between shoulder and bust.
2. I am not a fan of V-necks so I changed neck to a scoop and added band.
Kristin’s Garments:

Kabuki Tee
Paper Theory
Linen
1. Neck stretched out originally and shoulders have no give but that wasn’t obvious from photos online. Washed to see if it would shrink up. Hmmm.
2. Made 2 sizes smaller per reviews.
3. Changed hem to lower in back with a facing; front is original length.
4. Pattern instructions sketchy. Notch markings must be moved by sewist.

Kimono Jacket and Tee
New Look 6217
Rayon
Kimono
1. Quick sew and great pattern for beautiful prints or silky fabrics.
Tee
1. Good woven tee pattern.
Cielo Dress
Closet Case Patterns
Linen
1. Love the pockets, drape, shape, added detail like the bust dart from sleeve and back shoulder yoke.
2. Pattern is great-instructions maybe a bit overdone as sleeve went in like a dream-no need for all the fuss they described. But good for beginner.
3. Might make the neck smaller for me.
Ever wanted to see your garments here?? Choose a month that you can be at all four meetings and let us know. Want to try a pattern company, variation on a theme, wardrobe capsule? We will put you on the schedule! And you’ll get paid!

Second, the good/bad news:
KATIE IS MOVING TO NORTH CAROLINA! We are happy for her family’s new opportunities but sad to say goodbye. She’s busily getting ready for this month’s move. Her energy, style and smile will be missed-best of everything, Katie!
Third, the ask:
Have you ever wanted to get up in front of everyone and present your garments/latest foray into fashion sewing? Consider signing up to present at a Fashion Sewing Club meeting! You would do just what we do for one month-sew and present 3-5 garments at our four Club meetings and get paid-just like us. It could be a wardrobe capsule, variation on a theme, several patterns from one designer, etc.
Call or email us to sign up!! We are excited to try something new–
(Thanks for the idea-you know who you are ;))

Just in case you stayed home for the blizzard and couldn’t make it to another meeting-here’s a recap of the garments featured by Debbie, Katie and Kristin. The Club sheets are available under the menu heading “Club Sheet/Garment Photos” if you’d like more details.

Debbie wanted a casual jacket but not another jean jacket. Loved this one from Burda in a stretch olive brown denim.

Tie tees are everywhere. Debbie hacked her favorite tee pattern to make this version.

A little gold and a casual shirt plus she used Louise Cutting’s one seam collar technique to make a crisp (and narrower/current) collar.

A rayon knit is great in this ruched tee.

Katie works her embellishment magic to add a pleather placket and grommets to what would have been just another knit jacket.

Great summer sun dress in rayon batik.

A great outfit with fun seam details in the skirt.

Double weave gauze (?) from where or when we don’t know, but it was the perfect fabric in Kristin’s stash to pair with a brocade-like lining to make the narrow sleeved kimono from Wiksten.

Add an activewear knit top and Jalie jeans and you’ve got an outfit! Sign up with Treadle to take the Jalie jeans class if you haven’t made these fantastic pants!

Use the border of an embroidered chambray at the neck instead of hem for a different look to the quintessential (for now) ruffled sleeve. We’re offering this class during May and June at Joann.
We’re betting on good weather (or at least no snow) for our May meetings so hopefully you’ll be able to come and enjoy the inspiration in person!
Due to weather and road conditions, all activities today will be cancelled.
There’s still time to get your Fashion Sewing Club fix this Saturday at Treadle. Hope to see you then!
Fashion Sewing Club kicks off this week. Get your sewing “fix” this Tuesday & Saturday (Treadle) and Thursday at SR Harris (Burnsville). See you this week!
