And goes out like a lamb

Or at least it feels quiet and peaceful and the temperature is warming up!

April is a new month and the flowers are on their way. I watched Peggy Sagers on her YouTube channel last night and was, as usual, inspired to get sewing for spring. She had a good overview of what the world says we should be wearing this season along with some sage advice on whether or not we need to wear it 🙂

Click on Classes in the bar above for more details and registration.
Need a Sewing Machine?
First Sewing (inside Hancock Southtown) is offering a great basic machine in conjunction with our summer classes.
It’s an Elna with everything you need to get started. There are more Sew Green machines but Bruce has a few of the Sew Zebras so they will go on a first come, first serve basis. Let us know which one you’d like. These machines are good for beginners of any age so we’ll offer them to the beginning adults also.
Material Girls strongly advises you to purchase machines from dealers as opposed to big box stores or Amazon/eBay. Private dealers will help you out with your machine, guarantee their work and most will allow trade-ins should you want to upgrade to a fancier machine.
Material Girls receives no commission on machines-we just want to see happy sewists!

New Classes for Young Sewists/Show and Tell

We’ve added three Saturday classes in addition to our after school classes for younger students at the Hancock Southtown location:
Saturdays, March 14, 28 and April 11.

Spring Break classes will be held on Thursday, April 2nd at Chanhassen Vacuum Center and Friday, April 3rd at Hancock Southtown. Students can choose from morning and/or afternoon sessions. Stuffed creatures will be our focus at Chanhassen while several options will be offered at Hancock because of the availability of supplies at the store.

For registration and more information click on Classes on the website.

Saturday is the last Fashion Sewing Club meeting for March. We’ve had fun at the first two-great attendance at the Thursday Hancock meetings!

Summer Kids’ Classes

photoThanks to Maja Beckstrom and the staff at St. Paul Pioneer Press, our sewing classes for kids have gotten some great publicity.

We still have a few after school kids’ classes available at Hancock/Southtown on May 12 and 19 from 4:30-6. Kids will choose projects according to their ability.

The summer camps will vary from five consecutive days in the afternoon or weekly in July at Treadle Yard Goods to two day camps in June and July at Hancock/Southtown and Chanhassen Vacuum Center. The summer camps are geared toward 8-12 year olds. Projects range from a beginning tote bag to sewing garment separates from a pattern. Skill level ranges from beginner to advanced beginner.

We also have 4 sessions of our Junior Project Runway class in Chanhassen. This is an ongoing class of sewists ages 13-18 who are ready to choose their own projects and sew with guidance-older beginners are also welcome.

Registration for classes at Hancock and Chanhassen can be done online on our website. To register for Treadle classes, please call 651-698-9690.

Please click on the Classes button above and use the drag down menu to choose the location of the class you are interested in. As always, please email materialgirlsewing@gmail.com or call 952-201-3863 with questions.

Bagging It Update

We’ve had great feedback on the red bag and the great news is that Hancock still has the red faux leather PLUS a very dark brown and a more caramel brown color.

While browsing at Treadle on Tuesday, we found this fun, fun cotton that would be great for a lining.

We already have two people making bags today at Southtown Hancock from 2-4 pm and our last February meeting of Fashion Sewing Club is also at Hancock today at 10:30 and 6:30. You could get inspired to sew clothes, make a bag and run errands or share a meal with someone TODAY!!

Bagging It

Taking a break from strictly garment sewing, we thought we’d try offering a Bag of the Month class for the new year. Here are the featured bags for January and February. Quick and easy with lots of design possibilities.

We will also have After School Sewing from 4:30-6 on Tuesday.

April Fashion Sewing Club and Classes

Opposites attract.

Debbie and I taught sewing to two groups of girls during their spring breaks these past two weeks. Wonderful girls, budding skills and lots of fun. At one point, Debbie looked over and noticed our personal collections of embroidery flosses that we had brought along for teaching hand sewing. She pointed out how much they reflected our personalities and I laughed till I had tears running down my face. Maybe it was the fact that it was also Debbie’s birthday or the last day of our classes, who knows-but it made us both laugh for a long time. Debbie and I truly enjoy each other’s company and we bring different strengths (and quirks) to the partnership. Is it obvious to you whose floss is whose?

Since we are getting so much rain, maybe it’s a good time to do some sewing before the good weather gets here. We have quite a few classes on the schedule for April. We are also teaching sewing and serger classes at Hancock in Southtown beginning this month. We will offer the classes through First Sewing which is the sewing machine store that took over the Bernina space but you will also be able to sign up on our website (give me a day or two to get the changes made). Since there are two of us to teach and we want to ensure enough students in each class, we are offering two classes in the same time slot. We also want to clarify that Sewing With a Pattern is a guided sewing time open to all levels so if you are an experienced sewist stuck on an certain technique or have never used a pattern, that would be your class to be repeated as often as necessary.

Hope you can join us for Fashion Sewing Club or a class!
