September’s jacket had a zipper with a white tab but everything else was perfect. I had read about painting snaps and buttons to get the right color so I gave it a try on my zipper-it worked great. Hasn’t rubbed off yet!

September Club and Calendar

photo

After a month of vacation from Fashion Sewing Club (but not sewing-lots of baby things to make 🙂 it was fun to go back and get the July photos posted from that month’s meetings. The lollipop and gift bag pictured about was the treats shared with the Saturday Treadle group by one of the attendees-so fun to be part of a celebration!

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week! We have the new calendar almost finished for the website so keep coming back if you don’t see what you are looking for.

April Calendar, Easter Bags and ??

I knew that would get your attention 🙂
You just never know what you’re going to get at Show and Tell. The comment that made our day was, “If I wore those, my husband would have the big one…….I mean like heart attack!!”
This is a free pattern on Craftsy. Download link is here. Our sewist got her stretch lace at SR Harris for $.99 a yard. I think there is some at Joann’s too. She’s made a pair for herself (and loves them) and her niece. Maybe something to put in an Easter basket?

It’s our April bag of the month. Quick and easy to whip up and made inside and out from laminated cotton. Have fun making them at Chanhassen Vac Center on Thursday, April 17 or 24th, afternoons or evenings (see calendar below) or at one of our Sewing and Serging times at Hancock. Use your fabric or ours.

This Week’s Classes

March Serger Club
photo

This month’s project is the E-shrug from Linda Lee’s Sewing Workshop. It is a downloadable pattern for $6 on her website. Quick to sew and a wardrobe staple.

Debbie used a melon colored knit from Treadle Yard Goods.

Serger Club meets this Thursday, March 20, at 10:30, Hancock Fabrics, Southtown.
Sign up on this website under Classes at Hancock above.

Bags For Kids Project

Several of you stopped by Hancock yesterday and picked up kits-thank you! We sewed a few together and realized that the directions were a bit confusing. The bottom line is a 24″ wide by 30″ tall bag with a drawstring at the top and a 12″ wide by 15″ tall pocket on the outside. Serged seams or french seams keeps it clean on the inside. If you use a 60″ wide fabric, the fold will be at the bottom and the selvages will be at the top so they can simply be turned over to the outside or inside and stitched down to form the drawstring casing. Very quick to put together. We can always add the drawstrings if you just want to sew the bags at home.
We will be at Hancock the next two Mondays if you’d like to come and sew. Finished bags can be dropped off at the First Sewing desk inside Hancock Fabrics at Southtown. Kits can also be picked up but please call us or email before you do so there will be a good supply for you. 952-201-3863 or materialgirlsewing@gmail.com

Basic and Beyond Serger at Treadle
We’ll be at Treadle tonight (6-8 pm) for a three part class to take you from threading your serger to whipping up a tee. Only two spots left…call Treadle to sign up 651-698-9690.

Sewing & Serging in Chanhassen
1:30-3:30 pm or 6-8 pm Chan Vacuum Center, Thursday, March 20
Make a bag, learn to serge, get fitting help, sew the E-shrug. You decide what you’d like to do.
Click on Classes at Chan Vac Center above to register for one of the classes.

Last of the February Bag

I must confess I’ve had a bit too much fun with this bag. We’ve had great feedback from it so that helps. I had to try a smaller version/different fabric which is the size of the purchased pattern (11″ x 11″ x 3″) and then one more large bag in a third fabric.

I like the smaller size for more of a “purse”. The blue fabric was thinner but still has good body and was easy to work with. The black and white webbing is fun-a bit wider but there isn’t much variety out there in a webbing that can accommodate the cording folded inside-which isn’t mandatory for the bag, just one way to do it.

The gray fabric of the larger bag is nice but turned out to be too thick to get under the serger. It has more of a sponge feel on the inside so it needed to be lined on the bottom (whereas I didn’t do that on the others that had a nicer wrong side).

The red faux leather fabric (see previous post) is sold out at the Southtown Hancock (I’d like to think that’s because of the Material Girls and their clientele ;)) but the black and white webbing, blue fabric, gray fabric and chevron lining is all available at Hancock. Can’t wait to reveal the March Bag of the Month!

Tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 20) we will be at Hancock Southtown for Serger Club at 10:30 (McCalls 6844 cardi) and a 1:30 Sewing and Serging Class (at which you, too, could make a bag or whatever you please). Sign up through the website or email us.

February Fashion Sewing Club Begins Tomorrow

My apologies to anyone who received multiple emails or none at all. I will get it fixed.

In the mean time-here’s the content of the email some of you did or didn’t receive 🙂 Hope to see you at Club!

Dear Sewists,
Saturday morning at Treadle will start off the meetings for February. Hope to see you.

We have some fun classes this month-serger club will be making McCall’s 6844 cardigan which was voted by Pattern Reviewers as a Top Ten from 2013. You’ve seen three versions of this cardi at Club past meetings. Click here to see them again and come join us.

We’ve also started a Bag of the Month which can be made at any of our Sewing and Serging classes at Hancock or Chan. We will have the bags at the Club meetings or you can see them by scrolling down to the previous post.

And because we have been having lots of interest from the younger set, we are starting an After School Sewing class at both Treadle and Hancock, if you know anyone that would be interested.

April Fashion Sewing Club and Classes

Opposites attract.

Debbie and I taught sewing to two groups of girls during their spring breaks these past two weeks. Wonderful girls, budding skills and lots of fun. At one point, Debbie looked over and noticed our personal collections of embroidery flosses that we had brought along for teaching hand sewing. She pointed out how much they reflected our personalities and I laughed till I had tears running down my face. Maybe it was the fact that it was also Debbie’s birthday or the last day of our classes, who knows-but it made us both laugh for a long time. Debbie and I truly enjoy each other’s company and we bring different strengths (and quirks) to the partnership. Is it obvious to you whose floss is whose?

Since we are getting so much rain, maybe it’s a good time to do some sewing before the good weather gets here. We have quite a few classes on the schedule for April. We are also teaching sewing and serger classes at Hancock in Southtown beginning this month. We will offer the classes through First Sewing which is the sewing machine store that took over the Bernina space but you will also be able to sign up on our website (give me a day or two to get the changes made). Since there are two of us to teach and we want to ensure enough students in each class, we are offering two classes in the same time slot. We also want to clarify that Sewing With a Pattern is a guided sewing time open to all levels so if you are an experienced sewist stuck on an certain technique or have never used a pattern, that would be your class to be repeated as often as necessary.

Hope you can join us for Fashion Sewing Club or a class!

One Jacket Five Ways and August Classes

We’d like to promote the idea that you can get one basic pattern to fit well and then branch out and make the same pattern but no woman on the street would guess that it came from the same envelope. Our jacket class uses KwikSew 2896-here are 3 versions. Debbie has a linen version that I forgot to get a picture of-it’s at Treadle right now- and the fifth jacket will be revealed at the class. Reserve your spot today by calling 651-698-9690 (Treadle Yard Goods). Class starts Monday, Aug. 13 from 6-8 and continues the 20th and 27th, same time. More info is available under the “Classes” heading above or call Material Girls (952-201-3863).
