Field Trip, Anyone?

Winter seems to be over, the flowers are blooming and sometimes you just gotta get out and see what’s going on.

Eagle Creek Quilt Shop in Shakopee is hosting Anna Maria Horner (fabric designer) on Wednesday, May 13 at 6:30. Debbie has already signed us up and we thought we might make a half day of it and go to the newer SR Harris in Burnsville, have dinner and then head over to Eagle Creek.

If you’d like to join us, please email us (materialgirlsewing@gmail.com) so we know to look for you at whatever point you choose to participate. Sign up for the Anna Maria Horner event by calling ECQS at 952-233-3774 (you’ll have to send a check or stop by and pay $10). There will be goodie bags and appetizers for all.

We all need inspiration to keep us going but if you can’t join us I’d encourage you to read her blog. I just read her two latest posts and can’t wait to meet her in person. Her writing is much deeper (nourishing) than the typical pattern review stuff I usually read.

I am back from an extended stay with our twin grand boys and Debbie is focusing on her son’s wedding. One of us has her sewing done, the other just getting started. Hope you all are finding your inspiration to pursue your plans for warm weather sewing.

Spring Break classes will be held on Thursday, April 2nd at Chanhassen Vacuum Center and Friday, April 3rd at Hancock Southtown. Students can choose from morning and/or afternoon sessions. Stuffed creatures will be our focus at Chanhassen while several options will be offered at Hancock because of the availability of supplies at the store.

February Pattern of the Month

It can be very educational to see the same pattern made several different ways and on different bodies. So we decided we’d try choosing a pattern to focus on each month. To sweeten the deal, we are giving a $15 gift certificate for Treadle fabric to a randomly drawn person who has made the pattern of the month.

Vogue 9026
Vogue 9026
Vogue 8962
Vogue 8962

This month the pattern is Vogue 9026. I won’t give away everything about the pattern but there are a few things to be aware of if you are sewing the pattern. After opening the pattern and finding the finished garment measurements I realized that it was narrower at the hip (39″-medium) than the bust (40.5″medium). For my pear shaped body, that wouldn’t work. So I went to Vogue 8962 which had the same “back wrapped to front” styling but with a fit more like a pear shaped body. Bottom line-I slit the back pattern piece from hemline to the box marking the underarm seam and opened the slit to give me the extra width I needed at the hip. Pretty happy with the results.
One of the reasons we chose the pattern was the vee neck with a center seam. Unfortunately the directions tell you to sew up that center seam and then apply the neck band. No way, Jose! I applied the neck band flat and then sewed the center seam including the neck band. Looks great.
There are all kinds of possibilities to mix up fabrics in this pattern too. Can’t wait to see what you all come up with.
And speaking of pattern of the month-have you checked out Pattern Review’s Best Patterns of 2014? Several were featured in Fashion Sewing Club garments and there are a few I’d like to try.
See you in the next week-

Happy New Year Everyone!

We hope you all are someplace warm and enjoying the sunshine (parked in front of the fireplace? space heater under your desk?)

Anyway, good intentions back in December went awry so here are show and tell pics from Fashion Sewing Club. The garment photos and Club sheets can now be found by clicking on the button above. Our first 2015 meeting will be in two days at Hancock Southtown. We have a few new things up our sleeves for both Treadle and Hancock groups. Hope to see you in the coming week!

PS-Upcoming classes appear on calendar. More complete listings will appear this weekend.

You may choose to make all or one of them. You will most likely not finish the garment in one class but can continue at home or at the next class. We will begin each class with tips and techniques for knits and the specific pattern and then help you with pattern and fabric selection or construction depending on where you choose to begin.
