Inspirational Sewing from May Meetings

So many great garments to see in May (thanks to April snow?!?) You keep amazing us with new and different ideas-rock on and thanks for sharing!

Enjoy the heat and the long weekend-just in case your idea of a perfect 95 degree day is sewing in your cool lower level studio :)….

Cute Kids’ Clothes-Come Sew Some!

Sewing for kids is so much fun! Here are the patterns we’ll be featuring at tomorrow’s class (which still has a few spaces πŸ™‚

This pattern is a sweatshirt with a ruffle replacing the bottom band to make it a bit more girly. Sizes run birth to 18 months but will probably easily fit a 2 year old.

This pattern is from Burdastyle magazine-11/2017 and comes in sizes 3-7. We’ll have this pattern for you to use if you don’t have the magazine.

This is the tunic version of the pattern which goes from size 4-9.

All fabric shown is knits from Treadle Yard Goods. Great class to for giving your serger a workout!

Sewing Children’s Clothes meets Tuesday, February 27th from 1-4 pm at Treadle Yard Goods. Please call the store at (651) 698-9690 to register.

Thanks to my two cute grandkids (one of whom wanted to remain faceless πŸ™‚ for the fun photos!

Dye-ing to See You

After having my colors done, there were a few items in my closet that had too much contrast between the light and dark colors. Since Katie had done some dyeing, we got together and changed the dominant color (or lack thereof).

All garments had a white background

Pretty good match for my colors
After drying

Of course, the real test is what it looks like next to my skin color, but for that, you’ll have to come to Fashion Sewing Club πŸ™‚

Ready for the new season!

There are a few days left of summer so I’m not going to be a spoilsport and use the “f” word but in case anyone is planning into September, the classes have been updated and all should be ready for registration, etc.

School age sewists were an important part of our summer classes-so fun to pass on skills and keep sewing alive. We will offer Kids’ After School Sewing Club at Treadle on Tuesdays and at Joann/Yorktown on Thursdays. We are also taking on the “JOANN Kids’ Classes” for the time being so there are some weekend and school vacation offerings. We’re happy to have students joining these classes but working on other projects. Email or call us to schedule.

Below is the calendar in a printed form for September. We are adding a Serger Club to both locations (JOANN/Yorktown and Treadle). We hear Basic and Beyond graduates say that they still aren’t using their sergers as the workhorses they can be so this is an attempt to increase confidence and whet your appetite for all the ways to use your serger smartly.

We also offer beginning serger classes at JOANN/Yorktown but call it Serger: Down & Dirty and Bells & Whistles. Let’s get those machines out of their boxes πŸ™‚

The Skinny Pant-No Zip class was a hit at Treadle this summer so that is being offered again in September-love that Jalie Eleonore pattern!!

Workroom Social is back on the calendar at Treadle each month and we’ve added another time slot for the same type of class at JOANN-Sew Social, now at 9:30-12:30 AND 1-4 on most Thursdays. The afternoon class fills quickly!

JOANN has new seasonal offerings (Knit Tunic, Misses Jacket and Super Hero Cape) that might be what you are looking for, but if not, sign up anyway and make a pattern more to your style/skill level. We can be flexible!

Here’s the calendar-Fashion Sewing Club is right around the corner too.
See you in September??

Or at least it feels quiet and peaceful and the temperature is warming up!

April is a new month and the flowers are on their way. I watched Peggy Sagers on her YouTube channel last night and was, as usual, inspired to get sewing for spring. I’m going to highlight kids’ classes first because I’ve kept them waiting 😦

Summer Sewing-β€œPlay” with your sewing machine and a variety of fabrics to create whatever you have in mind. Students will learn the how and why of constructing with various types of cloth and techniques to help them create on their own. Basic patterns for bags, stuffed animals, and garments will be available as jumping off points. Students are welcome to take several sessions as the projects are limited only by their imaginations. Beginner to advanced-always two teachers/small classes.

Sewing for Parents Who Want Their Kids to Sew We know you don’t need a new hobby but would like to be supportive of your budding sewist. What you need to know about how a sewing machine works and what your child “needs” to purchase along the way.
June 24, 6:30-7:30 pm, Southtown Hancock

Click on Classes in the bar above for more details and registration.

Need a Sewing Machine?

First Sewing (inside Hancock Southtown) is offering a great basic machine in conjunction with our summer classes.
IMG_5001
59-1000_Sew_Zebra_500px
It’s an Elna with everything you need to get started. There are more Sew Green machines but Bruce has a few of the Sew Zebras so they will go on a first come, first serve basis. Let us know which one you’d like. These machines are good for beginners of any age so we’ll offer them to the beginning adults also.
Material Girls strongly advises you to purchase machines from dealers as opposed to big box stores or Amazon/eBay. Private dealers will help you out with your machine, guarantee their work and most will allow trade-ins should you want to upgrade to a fancier machine.
Material Girls receives no commission on machines-we just want to see happy sewists!

New this summer is Serger Workshop. We have so many graduates of our Basic Sergery and Beyond (also being offered this summer at Treadle and Hancock Southtown) and are hoping that you are all making good use of you new tool but in case you need some ideas or handholding for either woven or knit projects, check out this class.

Fabric + Pattern=HELP!(Southtown) or Match Made in Heaven (Treadle)get further along the continuum of solving the persistent riddle of what fabric looks good in what pattern. Beginners to advanced-it’s always a tough question-we have lots of experience!

Design and Sew(Treadle) Translate what you like in RTW into your garment using available patterns (not always a straight line). Learn to see the basic elements of a garment/pattern and add the designer touches that make them unique.

Our Hancock Beginning Sewing class will divide into a Garment or Home Dec/Crafty path after basic machine knowledge is gained. Seasonal Sewing looks a lot like our Knit Wardrobe class of the past. Our topics for summer are tee shirt dresses/maxi skirts, linen pants/tankinis that cover and shirt dresses. Sewing Studio continues to meet Thursday afternoons from 1-4, the greatest deal for guided sewing around!

If you don’t see what you are looking for, we do private lessons.

Have a great summer-we hope sewing is part of it-with or without us!
