Catching Up on Summer and Oh, By the Way…

It’s time for Fashion Sewing Club! This Thursday, August 9 at Make It Sew, Chanhassen at 10:30 or 6:30, Saturday at Treadle Yard Goods in St. Paul, 10:30 and Tuesday, August 14 at Treadle, 10:30 also. Love to see you-sew up that one fabric that you can’t put away for yet another season and wear the garment while it’s still summer. Here’s what’s on my sewing table:

Summer or Fall?

I missed out on the last two Clubs in July because I was in NYC meeting the new in-laws. We had a wonderful time. It looks like we covered alot of territory, and we did. Hot and sweaty but my favorite way to travel-on foot. We started at the lower end of Manhattan in the financial district full of families-that was a surprise, not at all an uptight neighborhood but lots of play space for kids and they were everywhere, all the time. Then the garment district-yup, made it to Mood (Are you watching Project Runway?). Husband chose the chair just outside the elevator and got to know the owner, Jack;Lizzie and I looked for tie silk and textured knits-with plenty of help from employees that wanted to cut samples for us. I’m surprised they didn’t check for scissors at the door. Then up to Museum Mile and the Schiaparelli exhibit. Well worth the time. We enjoyed “Harvey” on Broadway starring Sheldon from Big Bang Theory (that’s the only way I know him). The subway (a very warm wait before the air conditioned cars-how do men walk down into the subways in suits and long sleeved shirts and still look cool?!?) took us to the northern tip of the island to see the Cloisters and we sampled a food fair after a ferry ride to Brooklyn. Such a different atmosphere in all of the areas and we only hit a small part of New York. I watched for my “Sartorialist” moments but had to be happy just making camera noises as we had things to see and places to go. But there were dresses everywhere, even Bill made mention of it. So this is the summer to wear them. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. And speaking of people to look at-Abercrombie had a few young men in swim trunks in front of their store-thanks for the eye candy for females!

I told the girls at our summer sewing camp that they’d be on our website so I best keep my word. Four days of fun and their favorite thing was the hand sewing! Whodda thunk? We hope you come back for MEA break girls!

Whirlwind Week; June Club Sheets Online

June Fashion Sewing Club began on Saturday at Treadle followed by a full class of beginning sergers. Mary, the owner at Treadle started the day off right with the announcement that they will be offering Butterick, Vogue, McCalls and KwikSew at a discounted price all the time! You’ll have to check on the start date as there were a few bookkeeping kinks still to be worked out. What a good deal for all of us. Basic Sergery is so satisfying for Debbie and me because students, for the most part, learn a lot and leave feeling much smarter.

A new pattern line you may want to check out

Sunday we drove to Truman, MN (Iowa, as one Club member insisted 🙂 to stay overnight at The Whittler’s Lady Bed and Breakfast so we’d be near Fairmont for our class and trunk show on Monday with the Prairie Star Quilters. The class, Summer Coats, was held in a church and no one did the same thing! We had one Sophia Trench and lots of upcycling of favorite or “too good to get rid of” garments. That might be a good class to try up here.

Tuesday we had a packed house at Treadle. Wednesday we “Focused on Fit” with a basic shell-several full bust adjustments and nips here/tucks there. Thursday was Fashion Sewing Club at Make It Sew; Friday, Sewing With Sheers and Saturday, a full class of Sophia Trenches at Eagle Creek.
All Sophia Trenches except one student made a pillow for her future nursery-and my grandbabies 🙂

Whew! Doing lots of what we love to do. Hope all those who were part of our week had as much fun as we did. Club Sheets are online if you missed it.

I’ve Got the Blues

The June edition of Fashion Sewing Club is approaching quickly (first meeting: Saturday at Treadle) and I’m about ready to change the color of thread in my machines. It’s about time but I must say it has been a time saver and most items are matching each other (a new concept for me ;)).

See if you can guess which items match the garments at Club.

On another note, I ran into a Material Girl in the Joann parking lot (no damage ;)) and she turned me on to the Joann Fabric iPhone app. Very simple, it shows you which coupons are current, you download what you want to use (a matter of a second) and you read or show the coupon number to the clerk. No more sifting through old/new coupons. I would like to see a feature that gives me the dates for upcoming pattern sales. Maybe I’ll make a request-or we all can and maybe they’d make a change!

The Link to Bapron

Fashion Sewing Club Show and Tell at Treadle was awesome yesterday. While it was fresh in my mind I went looking on pinterest for the instructions for a “bapron” (as in baby + apron). Just a small piece of oilcloth or laminated cotton and some bias seam binding. I was unsuccessful at getting a picture into the blog so you’ll just have to go to the link to see how cute and simple a bapron is.

Or maybe you want to send me a picture, Margo, and I can put it in the blog 🙂

Upcoming Fashion Sewing Club Week

We hope the new year is inspiring you to spend time on your favorite craft-garment sewing. Did you see some of the pattern companies have released spring fashions!

This month’s Fashion Sewing Clubs will be held at the following times and places:

The Monday meeting at Make It Sew won’t be held this month but we’ll try again next month.  Thanks for hanging in there while the Bernina/Hancock location gets figured out.
Some of you also caught my typo-Bernina/Hancock subscription should be $17.50 for Jan/Feb. Oops!
Hope to see you and your sewing next week!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Everybody that is coming to my house is now on the road, the kitchen smells like gingerbread so it’s time to wish all of you wonderful Material Girls, “Happy Holidays and All the Best in 2012!” And then I’m going to turn off my computer and enjoy Christmas.

Here are show and tell pictures from December Club. We hope the receivers of your gifts enjoy them as much as we did. Garment photos are found under the heading Club Sheets and Garment Photos in top bar along with the Club sheets from December.

Happy November

We’re busy sewing for Fashion Sewing Club at the Expo. We hope to see many of you Thursday at 9:30 or Saturday at 10:15. Wear your garments so you can model them on the runway. I registered for classes yesterday and some of them were full and the hotel is fully booked so it should be a great Expo.

If you want to see us before then or get a jump on some Christmas sewing, we’ll be at Eagle Creek at 1 pm on Saturday (11/5) for Cute Skirts or serging yoga pants/leggings at Treadle on Tuesday, 11/8 or napkins/scarves at 6 pm. A phone call will get you registered-Eagle Creek-952-233-3774 or Treadle-651-698-9690.

Cute Skirts Class

October Fashion Sewing Club pictures are on the website-our first Saturday morning meeting at Treadle was well attended with 10 people and Dress Your Best was a packed house with 22 people! It was a great day and I’m trying to continue the momentum of managing my stash and sewing wardrobe capsules.
Wedding was great-loved my dress. New display option-don't we look good?

Well, it’s back to my machines. I’m trying to get into a Project Runway frame of mind-they get their garments done quickly, right? and everything goes perfectly? I can always dream…

Dress Your Best event

Dress Your Best on Saturday??

We need a few more people to make the Dress Your Best event happen on Saturday. If you are on the fence, please get off of it by 8 pm. today, Oct. 12, by calling Treadle Yard Goods (651-698-9690) and registering. Then look in your closet and find a favorite garment or winter fabric that you’d like to build a wardrobe around. Bring it on Saturday with any complementary fabrics in your stash and get started with a productive winter sewing agenda. We’ll talk latest trends, what not to wear, make up and image ideas….

And just in case you missed the Missoni at Target….

It’s at Treadle!! This is only one of them-they arrived after Club yesterday. Must have!! I hope there’s some left on Saturday when we’re back for Fashion Sewing Club and (hopefully) Dress Your Best.

Fashion Sewing Club at Expo!!

OK, I’m really excited about it and hope many others will be. Two years ago we had a booth at the Expo but this year we get to do our Club presentations-twice-Thursday at 9:30 am (I think I’m going to stay overnight) and Saturday at 10:15. There will be a runway to walk so everyone that brings show and tell should wear it so you can walk the runway too. Come on, you only go around once, right? There will be no Fashion Sewing Club meetings in November at our other locations.

We’ll also have a booth right next to Treadle Yard Goods. We’ll have demos of our favorite techniques/notions/patterns, etc. Some of our garments will be shown by models at the noon runway shows.

Looks like the Expo website is all up and running. There are quite a few garment sewing classes-lots of fit and some serger classes to get you going. Click here to go there.
Club will be free for November because you’ll be paying to get into the Expo and all. Subscription for Sept.-Dec. is on the website for $25. This year the Expo moves out of downtown to the Northland Inn in Brooklyn Park.

Classes will be posted this weekend and maybe even a new look to the website as I’ll have some undivided attention from my web consultant.

Hope to see what you’re sewing next week-

Monday, Sept. 12-Make It Sew, Chanhassen at 1:30 and 6:30 pm
Tuesday, Sept. 13-Treadle Yard Goods, St. Paul at 10:30 and 6:30 pm
Thursday, Sept. 15-Bernina/Hancock/Southtown at 10:30 and 6:30 pm

August Club pictures and more

The pictures and Club sheets for August are on the website under the “Club Sheets and Garment Photos” heading. If you weren’t there, we missed you and if you were, this should help you remember what you saw. As always it was good to see everyone and the weather was fine. Such beautiful summer days we are having.

On a more creepy note-some of you may have gotten an email or Facebook message from me about being mugged in London. The good news is it’s not true and I have my accounts back again (I think anyway, this makes you feel like you should always be looking over your shoulder or checking your accounts). If you sent any email to me between Monday, 8/15 and Wed. 8/17, I didn’t get it but someone else might have enjoyed it. Please resend anything so I can get back up to date. And thank you to those of you that alerted me to the problem as soon as you saw it.

Here are show and tell pictures from the Hancock meeting. Lots of fun and inspiration!
