Wrap Dress

We’re told this dress looks good on everyone-here’s what Carrie, our California transplant has to say:

I’ve really been trying to hit on the best knit dress pattern for a while- but first I had to find the right knit fabric. I picked up that fun
animal print knit from SR Harris – great body, hand, and stretch. I really took a step out on the print – but figured what the heck-
animal is always in for Fall!

I had two wrap dress patterns to choose from – the easy Vogue 8379, and Debbie gave me the Christine Jonson wrap dress pattern. I did my research on PatternReview.com and it seems that there are several adjustments people have commonly made on the vogue dress – sleeve cap too puffy, skirt too voluminous, and neck facings not staying put were common call outs. By the time I got through the reviews – I’m not sure why this pattern gets such high ratings! The Christine Jonson pattern has very few adjustments noted on PatternReview, one of the most common being the length is very long. I decided to go with the Christine Jonson given the reviews. I also like that it has the knit stretch worksheet to determine the best size – I don’t know why the big 4 don’t mention the need to adjust for stretch on their knit patterns. I did like the collar and cuff styling better from the Vogue pattern – they just seem to have a bit more “style” to them. However, after trying to get a nice point at the end of my collar I realized knit fabric doesn’t really lend itself to these fashionable details ; ) In the end I’m very happy with my dress and will make it again. I do think I must have a bit of a sway back – I seem to have about an extra inch of fabric pooling at the dip at the bottom of my back. My ties are also extremely long – but not much to complain about really.

Here is my picture – now I just need some great accessories to finish it off!

Happy November

We’re busy sewing for Fashion Sewing Club at the Expo. We hope to see many of you Thursday at 9:30 or Saturday at 10:15. Wear your garments so you can model them on the runway. I registered for classes yesterday and some of them were full and the hotel is fully booked so it should be a great Expo.

If you want to see us before then or get a jump on some Christmas sewing, we’ll be at Eagle Creek at 1 pm on Saturday (11/5) for Cute Skirts or serging yoga pants/leggings at Treadle on Tuesday, 11/8 or napkins/scarves at 6 pm. A phone call will get you registered-Eagle Creek-952-233-3774 or Treadle-651-698-9690.

Cute Skirts Class

October Fashion Sewing Club pictures are on the website-our first Saturday morning meeting at Treadle was well attended with 10 people and Dress Your Best was a packed house with 22 people! It was a great day and I’m trying to continue the momentum of managing my stash and sewing wardrobe capsules.
Wedding was great-loved my dress. New display option-don't we look good?

Well, it’s back to my machines. I’m trying to get into a Project Runway frame of mind-they get their garments done quickly, right? and everything goes perfectly? I can always dream…

Dress Your Best event

Dress Your Best on Saturday??

We need a few more people to make the Dress Your Best event happen on Saturday. If you are on the fence, please get off of it by 8 pm. today, Oct. 12, by calling Treadle Yard Goods (651-698-9690) and registering. Then look in your closet and find a favorite garment or winter fabric that you’d like to build a wardrobe around. Bring it on Saturday with any complementary fabrics in your stash and get started with a productive winter sewing agenda. We’ll talk latest trends, what not to wear, make up and image ideas….

And just in case you missed the Missoni at Target….

It’s at Treadle!! This is only one of them-they arrived after Club yesterday. Must have!! I hope there’s some left on Saturday when we’re back for Fashion Sewing Club and (hopefully) Dress Your Best.

Feeding My Addiction

Well, one of my addictions anyway. I used to see these cool scissors or one of their sisters at Joann’s and could scoop them up but I haven’t seen any for awhile. These are at Make It Sew in a very limited quantity in case you share my malady.

We’ve had several beginner classes recently and have been surprised at the difference in the quality of pins and scissors, etc.

That doesn’t mean you need to buy these scissors but do be careful not to go for the cheapest.

Gotta get back to the sewing machines, Club is next week.

Cool Baby Stuff

I realize most of my readers are past raising their own babies but this stuff is really cool and may have applications beyond just diapers. The new Stitch magazine features the “Babyville Boutique” line and guess who carries it? Hancock Southtown has a whole new display (on the endcap at the end of the left side of the cutting table as you are entering the store). Everything from plastic snaps to the water resistant “Pul” fabric which is used for making diaper covers to foldover elastic. You may have to buy some just because it’s so cute and has to be useful for something!

Looking for Leather

We’ve had several questions about finding the faux leather so hope this helps-

The softer, knit-backed leather used for the wool jacket is at Joann’s. Pretty sure this picture was taken at Joann in Shakopee. There is also some at Yorktown and Ridgedale stores. Word has it that there is none in Woodbury. At the Yorktown store it is in the middle of the fabric section, right side of the aisle, at eye level.

The gray, flannel-backed, and still supple leather used in the bags this past Club is available at the Southtown Hancock store. It’s on long upright tubes in the home dec section.

Hope that helps. We also have one unused copy of the Hibiscus Shirt (Laurel’s gold silk cotton) if anyone is interested in it.

September Fashion Sewing Club

The week of Club meetings started out warm and hard to think of wearing wool but quickly went to chilly and wool and layers felt good. Lots of good show and tell-here are a few details:
At Treadle, Pat showed a tie purse from ASG (scroll down-it’s the second pattern).
Good directions for the One Seam Collar, aka Express Collar.
Kristin’s Faux Leather Trim Jacket, Vogue 2232, is not available for sale unless you find a random copy on eBay. There are a few people in line to borrow the pattern. Email if interested.

The format of our website will be changing sometime this week so look twice before you decide you are in the wrong place. Calendar has been updated and classes are listed by location. We’re doing some new serger classes during the winter-flatlock skirt, totally serger tee, napkins and scarves and yoga pants/leggings. Expand your serger horizons and make a few gifts/garments in the process. There’s also a class for making a faux leather bag.

Fashion Sewing Club at Expo!!

OK, I’m really excited about it and hope many others will be. Two years ago we had a booth at the Expo but this year we get to do our Club presentations-twice-Thursday at 9:30 am (I think I’m going to stay overnight) and Saturday at 10:15. There will be a runway to walk so everyone that brings show and tell should wear it so you can walk the runway too. Come on, you only go around once, right? There will be no Fashion Sewing Club meetings in November at our other locations.

We’ll also have a booth right next to Treadle Yard Goods. We’ll have demos of our favorite techniques/notions/patterns, etc. Some of our garments will be shown by models at the noon runway shows.

Looks like the Expo website is all up and running. There are quite a few garment sewing classes-lots of fit and some serger classes to get you going. Click here to go there.
Club will be free for November because you’ll be paying to get into the Expo and all. Subscription for Sept.-Dec. is on the website for $25. This year the Expo moves out of downtown to the Northland Inn in Brooklyn Park.

Classes will be posted this weekend and maybe even a new look to the website as I’ll have some undivided attention from my web consultant.

Hope to see what you’re sewing next week-

Monday, Sept. 12-Make It Sew, Chanhassen at 1:30 and 6:30 pm
Tuesday, Sept. 13-Treadle Yard Goods, St. Paul at 10:30 and 6:30 pm
Thursday, Sept. 15-Bernina/Hancock/Southtown at 10:30 and 6:30 pm

All Knits Do Not Roll Equally

Several tees in the new Talbots catalog caught my eye:

It looked like the rolled knit embellishment I used on my “Strip Tees” last month at Fashion Sewing Club.

Which made me wonder if I was limited to cotton/lycra knits for this method or if some of the rayon and poly knits were candidates. So I sewed a few strips together, got them wet and threw them into the dryer.

Here are the results:

Unfortunately these are remnants from my stash so I can’t say exactly what the content is but, for me, the bottom line is: It’s worth the time to make a mock up and be sure I’ll get the roll I want.

Now to the sewing table to copy the tees!

August Club pictures and more

The pictures and Club sheets for August are on the website under the “Club Sheets and Garment Photos” heading. If you weren’t there, we missed you and if you were, this should help you remember what you saw. As always it was good to see everyone and the weather was fine. Such beautiful summer days we are having.

On a more creepy note-some of you may have gotten an email or Facebook message from me about being mugged in London. The good news is it’s not true and I have my accounts back again (I think anyway, this makes you feel like you should always be looking over your shoulder or checking your accounts). If you sent any email to me between Monday, 8/15 and Wed. 8/17, I didn’t get it but someone else might have enjoyed it. Please resend anything so I can get back up to date. And thank you to those of you that alerted me to the problem as soon as you saw it.

Here are show and tell pictures from the Hancock meeting. Lots of fun and inspiration!
